He just gave us translations to read. And when I went to the German, I assumed that any difficulty had to do with my then-limited German. Later, I twice took Celan seminars at Germanophone universities, and both times the first thing the professor said was that Celan was difficult. NO! I wanted to shout.Andrew Shieldshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02804655739574694901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599700202112999443.post-34376644077276100142016-03-26T15:12:52.044+00:002016-03-26T15:12:52.044+00:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599700202112999443.post-28124464204203967752016-03-25T14:34:41.701+00:002016-03-25T14:34:41.701+00:00Poetry nowadays sucks. I taught it at high school level for ten years, and kids reject it even when you tell them nursery rhymes, song lyrics, etc. are poetry. Pre-ginsberg poetry was still alive, but now it is a dead dog, full of mawkish sentiments, but most importantly without the essential elements of poetry...ie rhyme and rhythm, however irregular. It is a sad comment on world society, especially the U.S. one, that aesthetics and intellectuality are fundamentally dead or on their last legs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599700202112999443.post-3138687067518398662016-02-26T10:37:04.977+00:002016-02-26T10:37:04.977+00:00We're looking forward to seeing you read, Alis...We're looking forward to seeing you read, Alison!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17030223097549641037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599700202112999443.post-90125237260964277642016-02-23T21:42:29.294+00:002016-02-23T21:42:29.294+00:00I am particularly looking forwards to the lizards!...I am particularly looking forwards to the lizards! Whilst I am a hundred percent behind Sarah Howe, I thought that the Private Eye quote (which I hadn't seen before) was bang on the money - in fact it's probably the tiny tip of a much bigger iceberg. The charge is essentially one of crass cronyism which has long been a serious and festering problem within the British Poetry Establishment. Thank God for organs like Private Eye which attempt to tell us the truth. In my considered opinion, the British Poetry Establishment only has itself to blame for the black cloud of negative publicity and suspicion that surrounds it.

Best wishes from Simon R. That question is for you to answer, he leaves it open ended. I think that's what makes this so beautiful. If he would not have asked the question, would you have taken the time to research the answer? That is the motive, that you seek truth for yourself. <3 Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8599700202112999443.post-72111403948374463372015-11-05T11:49:25.967+00:002015-11-05T11:49:25.967+00:00Dear Kirsten
